Tyrone Make It Three Wins Out Of Three In Mc Kenna Cup
Mickey Harte will feel more than satisfied with his side’s start to the season following their third win in a row after tonight’s convincing 1-18 to 0-09 victory over UUJ. What will have pleased him most was the hard work and endeavour of all his players as they ruthlessly put the students to the sword, especially in the second half. Newcomers Kevin Gallagher, Plunkett Kane and Johnny Lafferty were superb throughout but this was a very focussed and intense display from the whole team.
The students opened the scoring with a first minute free from Ritchie Donnelly and through hard work and some good fortune found themselves a point in front when Conor Carson sent over a superb 26th minute score. However Tyrone responded with style and a Sean Cavanagh goal three minutes later restored the Red Hands lead and after that the winners never looked back. Cavanagh and Penrose added three further points between them and Tyrone reached the break 1-9 to 0-7 in front.
UUJ started the second half briskly and with their first attack won a free that was again converted by Ritchie Donnelly. But Tyrone completely dominated the remainder of the game in terms of play and possession hitting nine unanswered points and controlling the game with confidence. Sean Cavanagh, Plunkett Kane and Joe Mc Mahon all hit a brace of points each while Mc Mahon, Cavanagh and Mark Donnelly came very close to hitting the net. Tyrone won by twelve but would not have been flattered had they won by twenty, such was their dominance.
This win plus the other results from tonight’s games means that Tyrone will now face Fermanagh in Sunday’s semi final. The other semi will see Down play Monaghan with both games due to form part of a double header which will be held at Armagh.
