Clogher 3-11 Kildress 2-19

It was all or nothing at St.Patrick’s Park on Saturday afternoon in this sudden death relegation playoff encounter and it was Kildress who came out on top to preserve their Intermediate status and send Clogher back to Junior football.

It was a cracking encounter between two sides who gave it their all with so much at stake with the Wolfe Tones emerging deserving winners after a brilliant second half display. Phillip Lennon opened the scoring for the visitors before Ciaran Bogue bagged an 8th minute goal. In the next attack though Corey Holland scored a Kildress goal and they tagged on points from James Mulgrew and Shea Tracey. Bogue though was to the fore for the wind assisted Eire Ogs and he converted a brace of frees as well as a superb two pointer from play with Kildress’s only response coming from a Shea Quinn free. In the 30th minute Marc McConnel got a second Clogher goal and while Kildress had the final say of the half through Johnny Connolly it was the hosts who led 2-6 to 1-5.

The visitors came out for the second half with all guns blazing and by the 8th minute they were on level terms thanks to efforts from Shea Loughran, Barry McAleer and Quinn (2). McConnell edged Clogher back in front but in the next attack Caolan McNamee won possession before offloading to Mulgrew who smashed an unstoppable shot to the back of the net.

McConnell and Vincent Lowry had Clogher points but either side of those scores Quinn kicked two points before raising an orange flag as well. Jamie Callaghan steadied the ship for Clogher with a point before he scored a well worked goal to leave it all square with a dozen minutes left to play, 3-10 to 2-13. Holland then edged Kildress back in front but they had a let off moments later when Bogue rattled the bar with a goal attempt. It proved to be a turning point in the game as Mulgrew then scored from outside the arc and while Bogue responded with a quality point it was Kildress who kicked on. McAleer, Connolly and Quinn all pointed as they secured a massive victory.
