St.Marys Magherafelt 2-16 St.Patricks Academy Dungannon 2-12

Two goals in the closing eight minutes from Conor Holmes weren’t enough to save the Academy as they bowed out of this season’s MacRory Cup in the last sixteen at the hands of St.Mary’s Magherafelt at Rossa Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The Academy had made a lightning start to the game with four points inside the opening four minutes from Eoin Long, Liam McGeary and Lorcan McMurray. In the next attack the Derry lads opened their account in style with a well executed Eamon Young  goal and it was all square at the interval 0-9 to 1-6 after points for their respective sides from Joel Kerr, McMurray, Jude Beattie and James Sargent.

At the start of the second half it was the turn of St.Mary’s Magherafelt to hit the ground running and they did just that with points from Dara McGuckin, Young and Ronan Doherty either side of a 34th minute goal from defender Luke Grant as they scored 1-5 without reply. It looked all over but a well taken Holmes goal in the 52nd minute gave Dungannon some hope. Fergal Logan and Kerr traded points and with the game in injury time Holmes got another major to leave only three between the sides. The pressure was on Magherafelt but they didn’t panic with substitute Shea McCann getting the last point of the game to ensure victory for the home side.
