ST PATRICK’S Academy are back in an All-Ireland camogie final following a one point semi final replay victory over Coláiste Mhuire Trim on Friday..

In a close and hard fought encounter the replay reflected last weekend’s game as little separated the teams throughout.  The Academy played wind assisted in the first half but a two point 0-6 to 1-1 lead at half time did not appear to be enough given the conditions. Reagan Fay top scored during that opening period with three of her team’s six points but a Carrie Doyle goal for the Meath girls midway through  the half gave the home side a huge boost going in at the break.

The skies opened just before the short whistle making life difficult for both teams. The Trim defence had shown themselves to be resolute throughout the first half and trailing by two at the break must have certainly fancied their chances of progressing to the final. The Academy girls knew they were going to have to dig deep after the break but they enjoyed a stroke of luck as the strong wind eased following the earlier downpour of rain just as the second half got under way.

Following the restart the Trim dominated possession from the off but they found scores impossible to come by and the Academy weathered the storm while adding two points of their own, one each from Reagan Fay and Lára Devlin. Fay added a further brace of points to bring her tally for the day to six and put her team 0-10 to 1-3 ahead with ten minutes to go.

It was now a real test of character for the Tyrone school and during those closing ten minutes it was all hands to the pump as the Academy fought for every ball. When it was most needed the Ulster champions’ defence stood tall with Grace Daly, Aisling Begley, Annabell McAteer and Bronagh Barker all stepping up to the plate.
The pressure increased when a speculative delivery from the stick of Niamh Mulvihill went all the way to the Academy net with five minutes to go.

However in spite of the conditions and the intense pressure the Tyrone girls prevailed and made it through to the final where they will meet St Dominic’s from Cabra in Dublin.
