St.Patricks Academy Dungannon 2-11 St.Colmans Newry 3-7

St.Patricks Academy Dungannon produced a quite stunning second half performance in Friday’s Corn na Nog semi-final at Tullysaran to beat a fancied St.Colmans Newry side to reach the decider.

St.Colmans, who were beaten finalists in last season’s Dalton Cup, led throughout the game but the Academy stuck to the task in hand and they got their reward right at the end. By the end of the opening quarter the Down lads were six points to the good as Dungannon struggled to get to grips with their physically bigger opponents. By halftime St.Colmans had added another goal to their tally and all the Academy could muster in return were points from Michael Conroy [2] and Louis Conlon to leave it 2-5 to 0-3 at the short whistle.

Newry picked up where they had left off on the restart and by the tenth minute they looked to be out of sight after increasing their advantage to ten points. A scrappy Thomas McCormack goal however sparked the Academy into life and when Ryan McCabe found the net as well the deficit had been trimmed to just four points with the Dungannon lads now having the bit between their teeth.

The Academy continued to pile on the pressure and points from play from Shea Daly and Ryan McCabe coupled with a brace of frees from Michael Conroy levelled matters. With time almost up the winning score came from the boot of Michael Conroy and some heroic defending kept St.Colmans at bay to seal their place in the final against St.Pats Cavan.
