Academy Lose Narrowly In Mac Rory Cup

Abbey CBS made the journey home from O’Neill Park, still unbeaten as last year’s finalist St Patrick’s Academy still seek their first points after the opening two group games of Section D in the MacRory Cup.
Two superbly taken first half goals from Conall McGeough proved decisive as the Newry lads emerged victorious by the minimum. Dungannon will rue goal chances not taken in each half as the Abbey keeper produced two wonderful saves to prevent Conor Holmes hitting the net.
Eoin Long opened the scoring for the Academy but they were rocked by a 5th minute McGeough goal drilling the ball low to the left corner after he had made a super run through the Dungannon defence. Lorcan McMurray and Conor Holmes reduced the deficit to a point, by the tenth minute.
St Patrick’s were wasteful with possession and this was punished by Abbey with a brace from McGeough and Aaron Magennis on target. Dungannon did dominate the final ten of the half and a quick-fire double from McMurray, a mark from Holmes and a free from Long levelled the contest. Conor Holmes then edged Dungannon in front following a fine flowing move. Disaster struck for Dungannon in injury time James O’Hanlon levelled before McGeough won the kick out and grabbed his second goal of the half.
Three points in the opening quarter levelled the game but two almost identical fisted points from Magennis put Abbey back in front. Liam McGeary hit the target but once again McGeough kicked an important free. Substitute Daniel Carr stretched the lead to three in injury time and despite further points from McGeary and Charlie Maguire time ran out on the comeback.
