Owen Roes and Glenelly served up a hectic North Tyrone derby on Sunday in this Div 3 play off first phase encounter in Plumbridge. The home side would’ve gone into the game as favourites having beaten their neighbours earlier in the campaign. Nonetheless it was the men from Leckpatrick that won through thanks in the main to a late first half blitzkrieg.

Owen Roes opened the scoring early following a nice exchange of passes between Gerard McShane and Gerard Devine. this created a chance for Cathal McShane to clip over. Seamus Dooher doubled that lead on 11 minutes thanks to good work from Sean Dooher.

Ryan McAleer added to the lead before Andy Devine clipped over a short free as Owen Roes found their range. At this stage Glenelly were seeing plenty of the ball but Owen Roes’ back line was proving stubborn opposition making life difficult for the men from Plumbridge.

With 27 minutes on the clock Owen Roes got their opening goal. Cathal McShane secured possession on the touchline and slipped infield before drilling the ball past Simon Harney in goals. Sixty seconds later and Owen Roes had a second major. Clever play from Conor O’Neill set up Michael Dooher who palmed to the net and the visitors went in at the break in a very strong position.

Half Time: Glenelly 0-0 Owen Roes 2-4

The expected second half fightback from the home side never materialised and although Seamus Harkin got his opening score of the afternoon from a placed kick on 36 minutes, this was quickly cancelled out with a well taken McAleer before Cathal McShane grabbed another.

A placed kick from  McShane stretched the Owen Roes lead with Glenelly hitting a scoring streak late on with four unanswered scores. Nonetheless the last scoring action fell to Owen Roes with Gerard McShane getting a deserved white flag for his performance in added time.

At the other end Glenelly were pushing for a late major but Ryan McShane pulled off a smart stop to ensure that there was to be no late Glenelly comeback.

The Leckpatrick side will now face Tattyreagh on Sunday 25th October for the right to meet a Div 2 side in the play off.
