Aghaloo 1-20 Fintona 1-15

Aghaloo made it tyhrough to the last eight of the Connollys of Moy Intermediate championship when gthey proved too strong for Fintona in the opening game of the double bill at Healy Park on Friday evening. The winners led by three points at the break and in truth they always looked capable of holding off their opponents in the second period.

Niall McElroy and Jared Brogan exchanged early points before a good move saw Tiernan Watson palm to the net for the Pearses in the 3rd minute. Straight from the kickut though Aghaloo responded in kind as a flowing move finished with McElroy setting up Ruairi McGlone for a green flag. Aghaloo kicked on with GO POWER Man of the match Jodfy McGlone a collusus in midfield. He landed a two point free followed by a “45” and then a fine effor from play all in a three minute spell to help the winners ease 1-7 to 1-2 in front. Two superb frees from outside the arc from Aaron McCarney and Mark McGlinn kept Fintona in touch with wing half back James O’Hara striking a superb two pointer with the outside of his boot for Aghaloo. McGlone found the range again but a McCarney “45” coupled with a point from lay from Eugene Colton saw Fintona close the gap to 1-11 to 1-8 at halftime.

Aghloo were out of the traps quickly for the second half with McElroy landing a fine sciore after cutting in from the right wing and after Conor Quinn split the posts McElroy was on target again as the winners doubled their advantage inside ten minutes. Callum Welsh was unlucky to rattle the Aghaloo crossbar before the impressive Conor Mullen streched Aghaloo’s advantage to seven. McCarney knocked over a two point free and substitute Caolan Donnelly pointed from play as Fintona stayed in the contest going into the final ten minutes.

A lovely chip up resulted in a point for Quinn but then Niall Donnelly hit a brillinat two pointer for Fintona to leave it 1-16 to 1-13 with just eight minutes left on the clock. Aghloo though weren’t to be denied as McElroy, O’Hara, Jody McGlone and Mullen all landed scores to see them dsafely through despite McCarney had the final say with another long range point, his third of the night, to finish with an impressive 0-8 to his name.
