We had expected it to be tight between Aghyaran and Kildress but I would imagine most people were expecting there would be a winner at the end. However following more than eighty minutes of do or die effort both sides failed to find a winner and it will take a replay next week to finally decide who is relegated to Intermediate football.

The teams finished level thanks to a punched goal by Aghyaran full forward Michael Anderson less than a minute from full time with Kildress looking comfortable leading ten points to seven. The men in green white and gold had looked the better side for long periods of the game but will now regret the seven wides they shot in the second half. Fran Loughran, Martin Grimes, Des Treacy and Frank Mc Gurk had been outstanding for the Wolfe Tones but in spite of these excellent performances they failed to put The Saint Davogs to the sword. Indeed in extra time it was Aghyaran who had the better chances and Michael Anderson almost stole the game at the death with a speculative effort that just dropped short.

That would have been harsh on Kildress and in fairness a draw was probably a fair result. Both sides know they can play better but conditions made good football difficult as passes and shots went astray all afternoon. The game was tough and hard but fair and the teams deserve great credit for such a spirited display especially with so much at stake.

At this stage it is expected the replay will take place at Gortacladdy next weekend but that is still to be confirmed.
