Aghyaran Claim Minor League Title

Aghyaran and near neighbours Naomh Eoghan travelled to Donemana on Tuesday evening for the Grade Three Minor League final and produced a thrilling game that saw plenty of end to end action before the border men edged it by two points on a final score of 3-11 to 3-9.

Naomh Eoghan began well with a first minute goal from from Daire Devine and a point a minute later from the very impressive and hard working Conor Langan. The teams swapped points before Aghyaran enjoyed a very productive period landing 1-2 inside three minutes to move ahead with the goal coming from Shay Gallagher and a point apiece from Diarmaid Mc Hugh and Barry Mc Laughlin.

Another point from Langan tied the game at 1-3 apiece but a goal from Barry Mc Laughlin and a point from Barry Mc Menamin put Aghyaran four clear. Tiarnan Mayse pointed to narrow the gap but Aghyaran replied with a brace of points from the boot of the industrious Diarmaid Mc Hugh. With time running out Naomh Eoghan finished the half strongly with a Josh Gallagher goal to send the teams off at the break with Aghyaran leading 2-6 to 2-4.

Shay Gallagher pointed straight from the throw in to extend the Aghyaran lead but Naomh Eoghan bounced back with a superb Tiarnan Mayse goal to level the game. Diarmaid Mc Hugh pointed to put Aghyaran ahead again before Tiarnan Mayse (1) and Conor Langan (2) pointed to put Naomh Eoghan two clear 3-7 to 2-8.

Aghyaran replied with a converted forty five from Aodhan Dolan before a goal from the boot of Mc Hugh had the Naomh Davog’s two in front with the clock showing fifty seven minutes played. Tiarnan Mayse converted a free to reduce the deficit to one but as the game entered additional time Diarmaid Mc Hugh struck over a fine point to open the gap to two. Mayse saw a chance of a goal denied by a superb block from Cian Harper and had to settle for a point. With time running out Aghyaran broke down field and full forward Aodhan pointed to extend his team’s lead to two 3-11 to 3-9.

Naomh Eoghan did their best to create one further chance but the final whistle sounded to leave Aghyaran Grade Three Minor league Champions for 2020.

Final score: Aghyaran 3-11, Naomh Eoghan 3-9.
