An Eoghan McHugh goal in the 60th minute proved decisive as Aghyaran edged Cookstown in Healy Park, in their first round Intermediate championship encounter.
It was Aghyaran who started the better with a brace of Ronan McHugh points. Scores from Matthew Carberry and John Gilmore saw Cookstown grow in confidence. However, Tiernan Toner reacted smartly to deflect Diarmaid McHugh’s shot wide. Ronan McHugh converted the resultant 45. A 17th minute Luke Neeson point and a Carberry free gave Cookstown the lead. Cookstown tried to force an equaliser and claims for a penalty was waved away. Deep into injury time Ethan McHugh wrapped up victory with the insurance point.
Aghyaran can look forward to meeting the winners of Moortown and Fintona, Cookstown will regret registering 14 wides.
