Success for Tyrone at All-Ireland Wallball Finals

Tyrone handball enjoyed a highly successful weekend at the Adult All-Ireland Wallball Finals in Laois, with a number of outstanding performances producing All-Ireland titles and runners-up finishes.

Among the weekend’s successes was a superb U14 title for Ciarán Corr, who came through a closely fought final to claim All-Ireland honours.

Corr defeated Iarla Kelleher of Clare comfortably in the semi-final to secure his place in the decider against Ollie Morrissey of Kilkenny. Having fallen short in the opening game of the final, Corr showed great determination to battle back in the second and force a deciding tie-break.

The tie-break could hardly have been closer, with Corr holding his nerve to edge the contest 11-10 and claim the U14 All-Ireland title.

There was further success for Michelle Warren of Breacach, who retained the Ladies Masters All-Ireland title.

Warren produced a strong semi-final performance against Sarah Dineen of Kerry, winning two straight games to book her place in the final against Sinead Forde of Kells, Meath.

Warren took the opening game comfortably, but Forde responded strongly in the second, narrowly winning 15-14 to force a tie-break. Warren kept her composure in the deciding game and secured the title with an 11-5 victory.

In the Senior Championship, Sean Kerr of Breacach narrowly missed out on the title, finishing runner-up to Cavan’s Ben Devlin following a thrilling final.

Kerr produced an outstanding performance in his semi-final against Cian Dunning to earn his place in the decider, following his recent National Championship success.

He maintained his high standard in the final, with his speed, agility and skill once again on display, but Ben Devlin produced an excellent performance to take the Senior title.

There was also a runner-up finish for Niall Kerr of Breacach.

Kerr secured his place in the final with a strong semi-final victory over John Penny, before facing Kevin Brennan of Laois in an extremely tough contest. Kerr fought hard throughout, but ultimately the title went in favour of the Laois player.

Clare Conway of Loughmacrory added another All-Ireland title to the Tyrone success, winning the Ladies Junior Championship.

Conway faced Aoife Brophy of Laois in a tough final which produced some fantastic rallies and excellent shot-making. Conway came through after two games to claim the Ladies Junior All-Ireland title.

Unfortunately, Team Ireland representatives Eilise McCrory and Lucy McCullagh both bowed out at the semi-final stages after coming up against very strong opponents.

Overall, it was a highly encouraging weekend for Tyrone handball, with the county’s players once again demonstrating their ability to compete at the highest level and producing a number of excellent performances on the All-Ireland stage.

Attention now turns towards the World Handball Championships in two weeks‘ time, with Tyrone players preparing to finish the Wallball season on the biggest stage.
