All Ireland Title For Senior Ladies
Monday 04.08.2025
Tyrone senior ladies claimed the All Ireland Intermediate title at Croke Park on Sunday afternoon after seeing off the challenge of a highly fancied Laois team.
The Red Hands led at the break 1-7 to 1-5 and after Laois drew level early in the second half Tyrone played some superbly controlled football to run out 2-16 to 1-13 winners. Indeed had Tyrone shown a bit more composure close to goal in the first half the game could have been out of sight. By the break.
Darren Mc Cann’s side worked extremely hard from the first whistle with early points from player of the match Sorcha Gormley who was a thorn in the Laois rearguard throughout and Cara Mc Crossan.
Laois got themselves into the game as they drew level with points from Jane Moore and Emma Lawlor and then went ahead following a fine score from Lawlor. Niamh O’Neill and Lawlor swapped points before corner forward Emily Lacey put Laois ahead. Aoife Horisk, Slaine Mc Carroll and Sorcha Gormley were causing havoc in the Laois rearguard and added points to put Tyrone 0-6 to 0-4 ahead. Tyrone missed a second great chance of a goal but they refused to let that unsettle them as Niamh O’Neill made it a two point game.
However Tyrone were rattled when Laois broke through and Shifra Havill blasted the ball to the net. Another missed goal chance by the Red Hands and a Sorcha Gormley penalty superbly saved by Laois goalkeeper Eimear Barry had the Tyrone supporters and management scratching their heads. However Aoife Horisk got the Red Hand supporters out of their seats when she finished a fine Tyrone move to the net just before the half time whistle sounded.
Laois opened the scoring in the second half when Mo Nerney hit the target. Niamh O’Neill and Fiona Dooley pointed for their teams as the two sides appeared inseparable. O’Neill again and two fine Horisk scores put Tyrone three clear but back came Laois with a Mo Nerney brace.
Another point from Niamh O’Neill and a fine goal from substitute Katie Rose Muldoon put four points between the teams. That score knocked the spirit out of the Laois girls and although Emily Lacey pointed again Tyrone finished strongly with points from Gormley, O’Neill and team captain Aoibhinn Mc Hugh to take the win and claim the title on a final score of Tyrone 2-16, Laois 1-13
