Allianz Leagues May Be Delayed Further

The starting date of the new inter county football and hurling seasons looks likely to be put back further due to the current issues with Covid-19. A delayed return to action for GAA county squads is expected which will set back any possible starting date of the Allianz football and hurling leagues.

With the current situation across the whole island showing no signs of improvement it is not anticipated that there will be any return to collective training for inter-county squads before the 5th of March. With counties set to be given at least four weeks for pre-season training, it appears that the leagues will not get underway until the end of March at the earliest. This delay will almost certainly result in the All Ireland finals being moved from mid July to August.

The new starting dates are sure to impact on the scheduled programme of club fixtures as well. The result of this will most likely lead to a change to the date of the All-Ireland club semi finals. It is expected that the 2021 club competitions will now be completed in early 2022.
