Ardboe came out on top in their lough shore derby battle with Ballinderry this afternoon in Carrickmore. The Ulster Senior League final was a closely fought game with some big hits and several big performances but Ardboe turned in a superb display to claim the title.
The Tyrone side found the movement of their parish neighbours somewhat unsettling during the opening ten minutes but in spite of their possession and territorial superiority Ballinderry failed to make it count on the scoreboard. Ardboe eventually found their feet and settled to the task and with Brian Mc Guigan, Shea Mc Guigan and Nishy O’Neill to the fore they built up a 0-3 to no score lead midway through the first half. Brian Mc Guigan rolled back the years with some super play and his point on eleven minutes was a score reminiscent of the maestro at his best.
Ballinderry opened their account with a free from Collie Devlin on sixteen minutes but with big John Mc Conville providing a platform for his side Ardboe reached the break leading by four 0-6 to 0-2.
Both sides began the second half tentatively and it was seven minutes in before the first score of the half came. Ardboe ace Nishy O’Neill converted a close in free after he himself was fouled but Ballinderry responded in style hitting 1-1 inside three minutes. Their goal came from an excellent James Conway pass and a super finish from Collie Devlin. Ardboe however refused to panic and with Ciaran Campbell, Gavin Teague, Simon Teague and Raymond Campbell working hard they denied their opponents time and space on the ball. Shea Mc Guigan’s accuracy from frees punished Ballinderry on several occasions and the Tyrone side deservedly won 0-11 to 1-4 to collect their first silverware of the year.
