Ardboe 1-7 Dungannon 0-8

Ardboe denied Dungannon the grade two U16 double when they emerged two point winners in the league decider at Derrylaughan on Saturday afternoon. The Clarkes went into the game as warm favourites against a side they had beaten on their way to the championship title but the young Rossas didn’t read the script with a spirited display.

The superb Michael Cassidy and the hard working Niall Kelly traded points in a low scoring opening quarter before a point from midfielder Oliver Mallaghan gave Ardboe a lead that they were never to lose. Ardboe defender Ciaran Canavan then placed full forward Michael Lynn for a 25th minute goal to help Ardboe lead 1-3 to 0-2 at the break. Kelly and Sean Molly reduced the deficit on the restart but a trio of Cassidy scores left Ardboe five in front with a dozen minutes left to play. Ardboe were to score just once more though as Dungannon dominated the closing stages with scores from Matthew Walsh, Kelly and Kelvin Campbell but Ardboe held out for a famous win.

Ardboe scorers – Michael Cassidy 0-6, Michael Lynn 1-0, Oliver Mallaghan 0-1

Dungannon scorers – Niall Kelly 0-5, Sean Molloy 0-1, Matthew Walsh 0-1, Kelvin Campbell 0-1

Referee – Sean McCartan, Loughmacrory
