Ardboe defeated Edendork in the first round of the Tyrone senior championship 1-12 to 0-10 after a gutsy and determined display. Played in front of a large crowd under the splendid new lights at O’Neill Park Dungannon the O’Donavan Rossas were the better side throughout as a weakened Edendork side struggled to create scoring opportunities. County man Micky O’Neill and former county player DD Mulgrew caused Edendork all sorts of problems throughout the game as the loughshore lads became the first side through to the quarter finals of the Tyrone senior championship.

Playing wind assisted Ardboe opened the scoring inside the first minute courtesy of Mulgrew but a Conn Kilpatrick pointed effort and a strike from Daire Conway had Edendork in front after seven minutes.

Ardboe began to settle to their task and wing forward Shea Quinn tied the game at 0-2 apiece after ten minutes. Darren Mc Curry fired over his first point of the game and at the end of the first quarter the sides were tied at 0-3 apiece following a fine score from Conor Devlin.

The Rossas enjoyed something of a purple patch then between the fifteenth and twenty second minutes when points from Shea Quinn and Mickey O’Neill and a brace from the boot of David Mulgrew put clear daylight between the sides. Leading 0-7 to 0-3 they were on top all over the field but profligacy in front of goals saw them spurn further good scoring chances. Edendork finished the first half strongly and would have been reasonably happy to have gone in at the break only two behind following late points from Darren Mc Curry and Fiachra Nelis.

Ardboe pushed up at the beginning of the second half and looked sharp and hungry around the middle third preventing their opponents from building easily from the back. In spite of this Mc Curry clipped over the first point of the second half but a point each from Shay Mc Guigan and DD Mulgrew made it 0-9 to 0-6 before a well struck forty five from Niall Morgan reduced the deficit to two.

The fleet footed Mulgrew was causing all sorts of bother in the Edendork defence with his pace and movement. A mazy run resulted in a penalty being awarded to Ardboe on forty two minutes and team captain Mickey O’Neill made no mistake with the kick.

Shay Mc Guigan stretched the Ardboe lead to six with twelve minutes remaining as the Rossas defence kept a tight rein on Mc Curry. In the closing minutes however Dazzler converted a free and added two further points but it was a case of two little too late.

Ardboe finished on top and late points from Peter Devlin and Shay Mc Guigan sealed the win and a place in the quarter finals where they will play the winners of Eglish and Trillick.

Final score: Ardboe O Donovan Rossa 1-12, Edendork 0-10
