St Ciaran’s College Beallygawley came up just a little short following a superb Paddy Drummond Cup final in Croke Park on Saturday afternoon.  The Tyrone lads fought back bravely from a deficit in normal time but failed to recover from a poor end to the opening period of extra time.  During that period St Ciaran’s were hit for 1-4 without reply.

St Ciaran’s also began the game on the back foot shipping an early goal from the boot of Conor Heneghan.  At the end of the first fifteen minutes Ballinrobe had raced into a 1-3 to 0-1 lead thanks to that goal and points from Tommy Conroy.  St Ciaran’s hauled themselves back into the contest thanks to the superb Daniel Millar who controlled the midfield area for the remainder of the opening half.  Pascal Donaghy was also in excellent form firing over three excellent point from play helping St Ciaran’s to a one point half time lead 0-7 to 1-3.

Ballinrobe got control of the early part of the second period and with ten minutes to go they led 1-10 to 1-7.  Galbally man Cormaic Donnelly got the St Ciaran’s goal against the run of play and it was Donnelly that dragged the Ballygawley lads back into the game with some exemplary long range free taking.  The sides finished level at the end of normal time 1-11 apiece.

St Ciaran’s were left to rue their opening ten minute spell in extra time as Ballinrobe dashed hopes for the Tyrone lads leaving Ciaran Traynor’s second period goal as little more than a consolation score.
