It was another bitter disappointment for the Tyrone champions Eglish as they lost out again at the final hurdle in the Ulster Intermediate championship on Sunday. The final was played at the centre of excellence in Owenbeg on a blustery and wet day against Liatroim Fontenoys of County Down.

The game started with Eglish winning most of the possession in and around the middle of the park. Eglish had first chance to score but Aisling Jordan’s effort fell just short and Liatroim were able to clear their lines.

The opening score came from Shauna Jordan breaking clear from midfield and slotting home a point on the five minute mark. Jordan again from midfield tore open the Liatroim defence to score an almost identical point.

Eglish owned the ball for the next ten minutes but unfortunately scores did not result from their dominance. They did register a series of wides during their long periods of authority in the forward line. It was on the twenty minute mark when Shileen McDonald scored Liatroim’s first point of the game from a difficult angle. Eglish were again winning all the ball from around their back line anytime a threat looked imminent.

The scoreboard still looked sparse despite the superiority in Eglish’s play. Julie Lagan was pulled down just outside the area when heading for goal with Shauna Jordan pointing from the resulting free. The wide count continued to rise over the next five minutes before Liatroim’s Karen McMullan scored a point from open play.

Liatroim were finding Lagan hard to contain and she was brought down once more as she again made for goal. Ciara Donnelly took full advantage of the free before Liatroim narrowed the gap at half time to a single point. Half-time score Eglish 0-4 Liatroim 0-3.

The second half took on an all too familiar appearance with both teams battling hard but unable to take advantage. Lagan was again brought down and Jordan squeezed another point onto the board for Eglish after eight minutes. Both teams traded points in the next few minutes before Lagan got her just rewards with a well-deserved goal which she hand passed skilfully into the back on the net.

With ten minutes to go Liatroim got the break they were looking for as they attacked and scored a goal. The play intensified from here on in and it was another point for Liatroim when the tide changed in their favour as McDonald again closed the gap to one point. The tension was palpable as the game entered the closing minutes with neither side giving up. Liatroim again broke clear and dealt the final blow to Eglish’s hopes with their side’s second goal.

Eglish continued to battle for every ball but sadly for the Tyrone girls their shooting did not match the quality of their approach play and Liatroim held on for a narrow 2-5 to 1-6 win.

Eglish scorers Shauna Jordan 0-4, Ciara Donnelly 0-2, Julie Lagan 1-0.
