Eglish senior camogs travelled the long journey on Sunday to play Connaught champions Eyrecourt in the AIB All-Ireland Intermediate championship semi-final in Carolstown Kinnegad ,Westmeath. The pitch was in perfect condition despite the previous day’s bad weather. Eglish won the toss and played against a powerful but slightly diagonal wind.

The game began with Eyrecourt immediately scoring the first point within 30 seconds as they applied constant pressure on the Eglish back line. The Connacht side were rewarded with a goal shortly afterwards to extend their lead.

Eglish applied some pressure themselves winning a 45 metre free which unfortunately they failed to convert. A good passage of play involving Ciara McGready, Leanne Donnelly and Shauna Jordan resulted in another Eglish 45m, which Ciara Donnelly duly dispatched.

Eyrecourt however were relentless in the opening period keeping Claire Jordan and her team mates busy in defence. This incessant pressure from Eyrecourt resulted in a point, followed by another one from a free. The scoreline however could have even worse had it not been for the agility of goalkeeper Lisa-Marie Skeffington who made some superb saves in the Eglish goal.

Eyrecourt won a free on the half way line which resulted in the sliotar finding the back of the net. The strong wind was clearly having an effect on the game.

The Eglish back line were called into play and were kept busy by a pacey Eyrecourt forward line. Donnelly for Eglish pulled a point back from another free with 7 minutes of the first half remaining. That point proved to be the last score of the first half leaving the score at the break Eglish 0-2 Eyrecourt 2-4.

Maria Jordan was introduced for Eglish at the start of the second half which began with a determined Eglish applying all the pressure. However they failed to register the scores that were required to get them back into the game. Despite the Eglish possession Eyrecourt scored the first point of the second half. Eglish brought on Aisling Donnelly after 10 minutes as both teams struggled for scores.

Donnelly managed to score a further two points while Shauna Jordan scored a free to cut the deficit further.  Eyrecourt added a point of their own before a very harsh second yellow card for Maria Jordan left the Ulster Champions down to 14 players.

A fine goal ended proceedings and the girls from the West ran out winners on a score line of Eglish 0-5, Eyrecourt 3-6.

Eyrecourt now progress through to the All-Ireland final on March 6th.
