Tyrone went into Saturday evening’s Nancy Murray Cup Final knowing they would have to be at the top of their game if they were to see off the challenge of the Breffni blues.

Played in horrendous conditions at Inniskeen however the young Red Hand girls found the weather and the physicality of their opponents too much to deal with.

Favourites Cavan played into the wind in the first half and made light of the difficult conditions opening up a 2-3 to no score lead after fifteen minutes. The full forward line of Hannah Boylan, Shanise Fitzsimons and player of the match Orla Smyth caused all sorts of problems for the Tyrone defence as Grainne Rafferty, Aisling Jordan, Julie Lagan and Cathy Jordan were forced to work overtime.

Tyrone finally got off the mark following the first half water break with a superbly taken goal from Ciara Mc Geady. Team captain Roisin Mc Erlean added a point from play before Ciara Fitzpatrick rounded off the scoring with a late point to leave the half time score Cavan 2-4, Tyrone 1-1.

The Red Hands faced the elements after the break but for the opening fifteen minutes were the better side. Reagan Fay, Niamh Mc Nulty, Rebecca Barker and Kelley Cuddy battled hard to carry the game to Cavan. Roisin Mc Erlean landed the first score of the half after fifteen minutes to reduce the deficit to five but from then until the end Cavan were the dominant side with wing half forward Sinead Mc Kenna and Orla Smyth particularly impressive. They added seven points between them as Tyrone tired and Cavan pulled away to win comfortably on a final score of 2-14 to 1-3.

Next up for Tyrone in the All Ireland series is a semi final clash with Armagh.
