Tyrone camogs bounced back in style from their defeat to Carlow last week with a convincing win in Healy Park against Cavan in the National League in front of a huge crowd. It was a cold but dry day and Tyrone chose to have the wind in their favour for the first half. It turned out to be a good decision because wind assisted Tyrone had established an eleven point lead.
The home side started well when Shauna Jordan lost her marker with ease and slotted home the game’s first point from 30 metres with only a minute on the clock. There was a lot of determined play from both sides but Tyrone seemed hungrier for the ball around the middle of the park. Cavan conceded a number of frees and Aisling Corr was the beneficiary with a well taken point. Maria Jordan followed that up as she demonstrated great speed and scored a cracking point from open play. Cavan conceded two frees again in quick succession and once more it was Corr on hand with pin point accuracy.
The Tyrone back line of Ciara McGready, Siobhan Hughes and Aileen Fox maintained a tight grip on the Cavan forward line while Julie Lagan once again put in a captain’s performance and was involved in many fine passages of play. Corr and Emma McShane dominated the middle of the park in the first half and against the elements in the second period performed heroics at times as they battled hard to restrict Cavan’s opportunities.
Aisling Corr displayed great accuracy from frees in the first half hitting four excellent points. Cavan’s goalkeeper Smith was in fine form between the sticks and her ability to be in the right place at the right time prevented several Tyrone attacks from resulting in goals.
Tyrone were awarded a free and the quick thinking and accuracy of Maria Jordan was rewarded with a goal when she hit the sliotar into the top corner of the net. Another free from Corr just before the break left the score board reading Tyrone 1:8 to Cavan 0:0.
Cavan would have the wind in their favour in the second half but again Shauna Jordan took the initiative and scored an excellent point. Conditions made life difficult for the home side and Tyrone spent long periods in their own half but again Tyrone seized their opportunities and Caoimhe Rafferty took another point.
It wasn’t until the 42ndminute that Cavan eventually got their first point of the game. They then scored another two in quick succession before Emma McAliskey scored a superb point of her own. Cavan were finishing quite strongly and Tyrone introduced their substitutes. Orla Foley and Aine Donnelly were quick into the action as the play got more ragged and the teams started to tire. Jane Canavan battled on with an injury and Faustina Canavan and Kathryn Campbell all had some rewarding game time. Leanne O’Neill injected new legs onto the team with five minutes to the end. Cavan got an easy goal and a further two points ended the game at Tyrone 1:11 Cavan 1:5. Tyrone scorers; Aisling Corr 0-5, Maria Jordan 1-2, Shauna Jordan 0-2, Caoimhe Rafferty 0-1, Emma McAliskey 0-1.
