The beautiful grounds of St Colman’s College, Newry, was the setting for the launch of the 2015 Campa Chormaic. Now in its 11th year, Campa Chormaic was set up as a memorial to Cormac McAnallen, who died of a rare heart condition in 2004.  70 young children attended the first camp in the Brantry, where Cormac was born, and now the camp caters for in excess of 1,200 9-16 year olds in Tyrone, Derry, Down and Antrim.

The 2015 Camp was opened by newly appointed President of the GAA, Aogan O’Farrell, Cormac McKinney, Principal at St Colmans College the McAnallen Family and members of the Campa Chormaic committee.

“This is a fantastic memorial to Cormac and that the numbers have grown from 70 to over 1,200 in 10 years, shows not only the impact of Cormac on the young but also the interest in our culture, language, history and sport – ideals and values which Cormac so cherished,” said GAA President, Aogan O’Farrell.

St Colman’s College has been home to Campa Chormaic for the last 4 years, and along with St Michael’s Castlewellan, they provide the hub for Campa Chormaic an Dún.

“We are very proud to hold the launch of Campa Choramic at our school and it is a great privilege to be involved with the Camp these last 4 years. Cormac was a great leader and highly regarded as an academic and an athlete. He is an incredible role-model for the students,” added Cormac McKinney, Principal at St Colman’s College.

“We are very grateful to Mr McKinney and the school for hosting tonights event,’ said Pauraic Martin, Chairman of Campa Chormaic. “We are very fortunate to have strong relationships with not only St Colman’s but also, St Malachy’s Castlewellan, St Dympna’s Dromore, St Joseph’s Donaghmore, St Colm’s in Ballinascreen and Colaiste Feirste in Belfast. We are continually grateful for the support of those schools and those who have helped the camp grow over the last 10 years. We look forward to 2015 being better than ever.”

The Camps run throughout the summer and are targeted at 9-16 year-olds. With a new website launched this year, further information on venues, course content, dates and application forms can be downloaded from www.campachormaic.com.
