Campa Mhic Artain

Now in its second year, Augher St. Macartans Irish language initiative continues to go from strength to strength.

The camp began in 2018, the year designated ‘Bliain na Gaeilge’, commemorating the 125th anniversary of the start of the Irish Language revival, and as part of this, the club decided to organise a summer camp during August, Campa Mhic Artain.

The Camp was based at St. Brigid’s Primary School, Augher, and also utilised the excellent facilities of the Edge, Augher, as well as Fr. Hackett Park.

Taking place over 5 days, the camp attracted 109 children in its first year, and this year over 120 young people from across the Clogher valley and further afield took part in Irish language, music, dance and sporting activities with each camp attendee receiving a Campa Mhic Artain Jersey. The children involved held a showcase on the last day, to show parents what they had learned.

The objectives were to promote and increase the knowledge and use of the Irish language through sports, music, and dance classes and above all fun.

We provided over 24 hours of Irish language classes, sports sessions and music classes respectively, as well as promoting the use of Irish throughout the camp.

We anticipate that this project has potential to grow the Irish language in the Clogher valley area. We hope to increase capacity in the camp over the next number of years, as well as exploring other opportunities to promote the language in the area to both young people and adults.
