Carlow 1-10 Tyrone 3-14

Tyrone will be in the draw for the Round 3 qualifiers on Monday morning following a hugely comprehensive win over Carlow on Saturday evening. The Red Hands had some ten points to spare over their hosts in the end.

Tyrone led 0-8 to 1-2 at the break but it was Carlow who looked the better side in the early stages. Paul Broderick opened the scoring in the 2nd minute for the hosts with an outstanding fifty metre free conversion off the ground from beneath the Stand.

Richard Donnelly levelled matters with a fine effort from distance and after Darragh Foley and Frank Burns had traded points Conor Meyler edged Tyrone in front.

In the 16th minute though Carlow struck for a goal when Broderick outpaced the Tyrone defence on the left before squaring the ball to full forward Darragh O’Brien who fired low to the net past keeper Niall Morgan.

That proved to be their last score of the first half though as Tyrone began to push up on the Carlow kickouts. Carlow keeper Robbie Molloy denied Connor McAliskey a goal with a fine save and after the latter had converted a free team Captain Mattie Donnelly levelled matters with a quality point from the left wing in the 27th minute.

McAliskey then exchanged passes with Peter Harte to put Tyrone in front before a long delivery in from wing half back Michael McKernan saw McAliskey get on the end of it to punch over.

Tyrone were well on top at this stage and they had the final say of the half when Harte found Donnelly and he angled over another quality score from out on the left wing.

McAliskey and Broderick exchanged points from frees on the restart before Harte got his name on the scoresheet with a point with his weaker right foot. Declan McClure then got in on the act before Tyrone put the game beyond doubt when great work from Harte saw him set up Niall Sludden for a palmed goal.

Broderick and Foley landed scores from frees for the home side but they continued to struggle from play. Sludden took a superb point from play and in the 65th minute Tyrone were awarded a penalty when Mattie Donnelly was fouled, Harte expertly tucking it away.

Richard Donnelly and Foley swapped points and while the latter got another couple it was the visitors who put the icing on the cake with a goal from full forward Donnelly deep into injury time.
