Carmen Can Ceili Poster

With only a week to go, Carrickmore is bracing itself !!!  The Patrician provides the setting for Carrickmore Handball Club’s unique Céilí dancing extravaganza.  Combining experience with ‘raw talent’ and good craic, the 80 strong troop has brought Irish dancing to a new level and will deliver a spectacular show that is not to be missed.

On Monday 1 September 2014, life in Carrickmore changed for ever.  Normally quiet weeknights were replaced by traffic jams in the centre of the town as the dancers abandoned their cars to make sure they didn’t miss a minute of  Class in The Patrician.  Despite gruelling training sessions and never-ending cycles of “1,2,3’s” and “7’s”, their dedication was unfailing – and their progress was evident as they approached the official launch night on Friday 19 September.

Éire Óg

In recognition of the sporting opportunities that Carrickmore has to offer and the role of the associated clubs in the community, each of the ten dancing teams is representing one of those clubs and being captained by a member of that club.

Carrickmore Boxing Club

We have the Carmen Walkers dancing rings around the Boxing Club and Éire Óg clashing with the Termon Wheelers.  Adding to the team rivalries, we have some family battles being played out as fathers compete against daughters, mothers take on sons and sisters go head to head.  To try to keep the peace, we’ve drafted in support from Pomeroy, Loughmacrory, Omagh, Brackey and Aghaloo.  Mind you, Cathal Mc Crory is sailing close to the wind with his “#ose#for Ulster” !

Carrickmore Handball Club

Since the teams were announced, the training has stepped up a notch and Céilí dancing music has been emanating from the strangest of venues – from classrooms to garages.  The Charm Inn has proven to be popular – with some teams ‘practising’ until after midnight!  An Charraig Mhór GFC’s clubrooms have also played host to numerous teams.  Indeed, Jimmy’s “Black Book” has to be kept under lock and key to prevent any sabotage or double bookings.

Carrickmore Tug O War

We’ve heard glowing reports about “Side Stepper Stal” and “Red Dan”.  We’ve learned how Christina Mc Elduff’s quiet demeanour and understanding nature have lessened the pain in Gerry Kelly’s feet.  And we’ve been told that Frankie Grogan has seized the opportunity to get himself primed for “No. 10”.

Carmen Walkers

Hosted by our very own Cormac Mc Aleer, a production on this scale and with the talent on offer has, understandably, attracted a lot of attention.  So much so that Michael Flatley is rumoured to have bought a ticket for the Saturday night show – obviously to check if his dominance is under threat.

Carmen Runners

Also scrutinising the performances on the night will be our accomplished judging panel.  As our ‘technical’ judge, Paula Clarke will have her expertise well tested by the “Carmen Can Céilí” troop.  Once described as an “irrepressible raconteur and wit”, Barry Mc Elduff will no doubt share his unique take on our Céilí dancing extravanganza.  Completing the line-up,Carol Doey has appraised dancers from all corners of Tyrone and, quite confident in her own ability, advises dancers to pass no remarks on ‘Wee Barry’ or the doll from Killyclogher.

An Charraig Mhór GFC

So folks, it’s fair to say that, with its feast of footwork and fun, “Carmen Can Céilí” is an experience not to be missed !!!
