Carrickmore ladies made it through to the final of the Senior Championship this evening after a narrow but hard fought win over defending champions St Macartans. The winners were boosted by the scoring of two early goals courtesy of Sinead Mc Aleer and Gemma Begley and on a night when conditions would prove difficult those scores would prove decisive.
Macartans battled back gamely led by Maura Mc Menamin, Lynda and Cathy Donnelly as they fought right to the end. They came mighty close to winning the game when Cathy Donnelly blasted over from close range with the Clogher Valley side trailing by two points. Carrickmore introduced veteran Eilis Gormley and with Lynette Hughes aiding and abetting they managed to see their team home. They spent most of the second half in their own half defending gamely relying on their ability to counter attack to keep them in front. Macartans had two players sin binned at different times in the second half but in spite of this they continued to play high quality attacking football.
The reigning champions pushed everyone forward in an attempt to salvage the match but when the move broke down the ball fell to Carrickmore forward Gemma Begley. The county star managed to carry the ball forty yards before she found Claire Gallagher in space and the blonde haired attacker sealed the win with an excellent point. The winners can now look forward to a meeting with Errigal Ciaran in the final which is sure to revive memories of clashes past. Final score Carrickmore 2-5, St Macartans 1-6.
Scorers: Carrickmore, Gemma Begley 1-2, Sinead Mc Aleer/O’Neill 1-0, Claire Gallagher 0-3
St Macartans: Paula Donnelly 1-0, Cathy Donnelly 0-3, Joline Donnelly 0-2, Mary Louise Mc Girr 0-1.
