The large crowd that braved the bitter cold of Pomeroy this afternoon was treated to a real ding dong battle between Carrickmore and Cookstown in the top four play-off game before Carmen edged it by a single point.
Both teams produced some superb football and were level on several occasions throughout the game including finishing the first half eight points apiece.
Carrickmore began the match strongly and with Mark Donnelly and Martin Penrose in good form opened up a three point lead 0-5 to 0-2 midway through the first half. When it looked like Carrickmore were starting to build a head of steam Eoin Mulligan rose to the challenge and produced a master class of free taking to help put Cookstown three in front (0-8 to 0-5) with five minutes of the half remaining. Carrickmore showed great self belief and resilience to tie the game at the break with Penrose, Donnelly and Micky Donaghy leading the way.
The second half again saw both sides produce some excellent football and fine finishing as the game ebbed and flowed. Carrickmore looked to have stolen a mark when Colm Mc Gurk ended a superb run with a fantastic goal. However Mulligan, James Mc Gahan and company continued to drive forward and when Paul Mc Gurk found the net with time almost up to leave a point between the teams the scene was set for an exciting climax. Eoin Mulligan rounded off a superb individual display with a brilliantly executed free to level the scores on 1-13 apiece as the clock turned thirty one minutes. The Fr Rocks won possession from the Carrickmore kick out but Martin Penrose worked hard to turn the ball over and send Caolan Daly through on goal. The former Irish Handball Champion was hauled to the ground as he bore down on the Cookstown goals. The resultant free was converted by Martin Penrose ensuring a narrow Carmen win on a final score of 1-14 to 1-13.
Carrickmore will now face Dromore in the league semi final next weekend.
