Carrickmore Squeeze Past Unlucky Edendork
Wednesday 25.09.2019
It took just over two hours of football to separate Carrickmore and Edendork in the 2019 LCC Tyrone Senior Football Championship and despite 0-10 from Darren McCurry and two brilliantly taken Martin Penrose goals it all came down to a controversial free in the dying seconds of normal time. The writing was on the wall for Edendork when the free was awarded just thirty seconds from the end of normal time. Mickey Donaghy stepped up and converted to send Carrickmore into the final four while Edendork contemplate what might have been.
Walking out of the ground the Carrickmore supporters thought their man was definitely fouled. Edendork supporters saw it differently. What everyone else who was there can definitely agree on was that the contest really deserved an extra 20 minutes of extra time and another game if necessary to decide the outcome.
The first half produced an excellent display of football with the two sides separated only by a Martin Penrose goal in the last seconds of additional time. Before that Darren McCurry, Paul Donaghy, Ciaran Daly and Martin Penrose were all on the scoreboard with points for their respective sides.
Edendork were dealt a body blow at the beginning of the second period as Penrose once again had the ball dispatched past Niall Morgan to put Carrickmore six points ahead. Edendork looked dead and buried but their response was stunning. First McCurry hit a point, followed by another from Daire Conway. McCurry and Donaghy added two more before another brace of points from McCurry had Edendork back level again. By the 41st minute Darren McCurry put Edendork into the lead with a superb point from the left wing.
Carrickmore were struggling but Ryan Daly introduced Mark Donnelly, Aidan Fullerton, Lorcan McBride and Conor Gormley to the action and they began to find their feet again. Mickey Donaghy levelled the scoreline with 18 minutes to go 2-8 to 0-14. The last quarter was played at a serious pace with McCurry, Paul Donaghy, Mickey Donaghy and Martin Penrose all adding points. A couple of more McCurry points eased Edendork into a two point lead with three minutes of normal time remaining. Carrickmore refused to go away. First Penrose and then Conor Gormley levelled the scores again and it came down to that last thirty seconds and that much debated free to decide the contest.
Final Score : Carrickmore 2-12 Edendork 0-17
