Saturday 09.11.2024
Carrickmore 1-15 0-9 Eglish
A superb second half performance from Carrickmore, with man of the match Vincent Gormley, the tormentor in chief saw Carrickmore defeat Eglish to lift the Grade 1 Under 16 championship in Dungannon.
It was evenly poised after an entertaining first half, which saw the sides level at 5 a piece at the interval. Eglish had opened the scoring in the first minute before both keeper had to make important saves in a lively first ten minutes. Rory O’Donnell gave Eglish the lead after 13 minutes before Carrickmore strung 4 points in a row to seize the advantage, the third point seeing a Vinny Gormley penalty go over the bar
A strong finish to the half saw Eglish reassume control and a brace of O’Donnell scores, and a point from Joe Mackin levelled the contest.
The first score of the second half was pivotal, Sean Donaghy’s centre was fisted to the net by Gormley.
A trio of Gormley points in quick succession, establishing a cushion that despite the best efforts of Eglish in the final twenty minutes, the title was heading to Carrickmore. Three Ruairi Woods points from half back and four from full forward. Ryan Donaghy epitomised the all-around team efforts of the winners. Rory O’Donnell finished Eglish’s scoring with his fourth, but Carrickmore were worthy championship winners.
Eglish does have an opportunity to exact revenge when the sides meet again in the League decider next weekend.
