Castlederg captured the under 14 grade three league title at Clanabogan in a highly entertaining clash with Rock on a score line of 3-11 to 1-14. These sides had met a few weeks ago in the final of the Feile and Rock deservedly won that one after extra time but although they pushed the Derg close at the end the north Tyrone lads were not to be denied.

Castlederg began well with Conor Harper, Shane Cartin and Darren Traynor prominent and all three of these players caused lots of problems for the Rock defence.  A fine goal in the 17th minute from Darren Harper put the Derg six points in front and in a strong position. However Rock captain Liam Nugent made sure his team remained in with a chance when he set up Aidan Corrigan for a goal in the twenty first minute of the half to reduce the gap to three points. Indeed had Nugent managed to convert a half chance a few minutes before that when he hit the post the game could have taken on a different shape.

However Castlederg showed great character as they responded with a superb goal of their own from big midfielder Lorcan Mc Guigan. Further points from Harper and Traynor and a superb save from Derg goalkeeper Christopher Mc Gettigan ensured they went in at the break in a strong position leading 2-10 to 1-4. This was the first of several great saves made by Mc Gettigan as he proved himself to be one of the heroes of his side’s fine win.

Rock came back strongly in the second half with Nugent and Aidan Corrigan leading the way. Two bursts of scoring which yielded seven points gave Rock further hope but a Conor Harper goal in the seventeenth minute put the Derg well clear once again. Rock continued to pile forward and Corrigan came close to finding the net again only to be denied by the heroics of Mc Gettigan in the Castlederg goal and some tenacious work by Conor Ramsey.

The final whistle sounded shortly after and Castlederg celebrated a fine win and the acquisition of the league title. This was a high quality game played by two very talented and enterprising sides that deserve great credit for the manner in which they played this evening. Congratulations also to Drumragh club whose fine facilities made the playing of good football easy for the players.
