Clonoe 0-12 Galbally 2-4

League champions Clonoe justified their favourites tag to progress to the Murphys Gloves Junior Championship Final but they had to pull out all the stops to defeat a battling Galbally side at Coney Park in Ardboe on Saturday afternoon.

The game was held up for almost two hours when Galbally half forward Clare McKeown picked up an injury that required an ambulance to attend the venue but thankfully she was discharged from Hospital later that evening. Clonoe led 0-9 to 0-2 at the break with key attacker Orlagh Gavin hitting half a dozen points with Briana Quinn getting a brace and Aimee Hughes also on target, Ciara Kelly and Clare McKeown the Galbally scorers.

Galbally had enjoyed as much possession in the first half but some wayward passing cost them but they began the second half brightly with a point from McKeown. Clonoe keeper Liza McKee then came to her side’s rescue to make a good save to deny Rachel Kelly a goal before another Gavin free was followed by a point from Quinn.

That left the score 0-11 to 0-3 but Galbally then enjoyed a good spell with points from Catherine Walker and Rachel Kelly coming either side of a Ciaran Kelly goal. Gavin had a Clonoe point but that proved to be their only score in the final quarter. The same player sent a penalty wide before that lengthy stoppage for the injury with the scoreboard reading 0-12 to 1-4. When play resumed the referee indicated that there was seven minutes to play and in the first of those minutes Ciara Kelly got her second goal. It was very much game on again but Clonoe were content to keep ball in those closing minutes as they kept the Pearses at bay to qualify for a final meeting with Loughmacrory.
