CLUB | Championship Wins For Glenelly and Tattyreagh
Sunday 21.08.2016
The Junior Championship double header at Killyclogher on Sunday evening attracted a large crowd and saw wins for Glenelly over Errigal Thirds and Tattyreagh over Fintona.
The first game between Errigal Ciaran 3rds and Glenelly was slow to start with both teams wasting possession and opportunities. The sides were level four times during the opening thirty minutes before a converted free from Seamus Harkin sent Glenelly in at the break leading 0-5 to 0-4.
There was a considerable increase in intensity from both sides after the break as the Errigal defence where Darren Mc Cann, Eugenio Mallon, Patrick Mc Carron and Justin Mc Kenna were superb, denied the Glenelly forward line time and again. John Kelly and Sean Mellon worked their socks off while Cathal Corrigan, Daire Tierney, Niall Mc Cartan and Nigel Loughran asked serious questions of the Glenelly defence.
Indeed when a speculative effort from Mc Cartan went all the way to the net in the 56th minute to put Errigal one in front a real upset looked very likely.
However Glenelly regrouped and driven on by Ciaran Kearney, Tim Harney, Liam and Michael Nicholas, Seamus Harkin and Ronan O’Kane they landed three late points in a row to snatch the win on a final score of 0-13 to 1-9.
The second game of the double header saw Fintona fall heavily to their neighbours and rivals Tattyreagh in spite of a spirited second half.
Stevie Mc Hugh’s team produced some sublime football in the opening half with Collie Harkin, Eoin Mc Ginn, James Darcy and Darren Mullan hugely impressive. James Darcy and Collie Harkin both hit the net for the Tatts with Darcy’s goal a sublime finish while Harkin converted a penalty after Darcy had been hauled to the ground.
Leading 2-5 to 0-0 after twenty minutes it seemed to be only a question of the margin of victory for Tattyreagh. However Fintona showed considerable resolve and in a spirited second half added one four to their total. Paul Martin, Aaron Mc Carney, Niall Mellon and Eugene Liam Mc Carroll battled throughout but were unable to prevent the inevitable and when Collie Harkin and sub Mickey Mullan added 1-5 between them inside the closing four minutes it was no more than Tattyreagh deserveFinal score Tattyreagh 3-14, Fintona 1-5.
