Cookstown’s experience and know how came to the fore at Plunkett Park on Saturday afternoon as they got the better of Brackaville 1-18 to 1-11 in the opening round of the Donnelly Vauxhall Intermediate championship.
The Roes gave as good as they got early on and actually led by two points thanks to efforts from Dale McSorley, Martin Gervin and centre half back Stiofan Gervin. Owen Mulligan, Christopher Eastwood and Barry Potter registered points as the Father Rocks turned things around to lead 0-8 to 0-6 at the break.
Twelve seconds into the second half Ryan Pickering put Cookstown further in front and they never looked back. John Gilmore came off the bench to score four points and also win a penalty. He took the penalty himself but Stephen O’Neill saved it although the Brackaville keeper then fouled Gilmore from the rebound. Mulligan this time took the spot kick and made no mistake on hid way to a personal haul of 1-4. McSorley and Gary Ferguson had Brackaville points with the former also converted a spot kick. Shea Fee came off the bench to score twice for the Roes but it wasn’t enough on the night.
