CLUB | Pomeroy Secure Inter Title
Sunday 09.10.2016
Pomeroy celebrated their centenary year in style with a hard earned but thoroughly deserved win over Derrylaughan in the Intermediate championship final.
This was a hugely entertaining game between two good sides with the outcome decided decided by Pomeroy’s greater quality. County men Hugh Pat and Kieran Mc Geary along with Frank Burns provided the leadership and direction as well as the key scores that saw the Plunketts secure the title.
Burns finished with 1-6 while Chris Colhoun and Ryan Loughran both bagged well taken goals.
The Kevin Barrys led after three minutes when Ciaran Gervin converted an early chance but they found the pace and hunger of their opponents too much to handle at times but Liam Gervin, Martin Mc Stravog, Colm O’Hagan and Sean Robinson did their best to keep their side in the game.
Pomeroy were leading 0-7 to 0-4 and looking good value for their lead when Ciaran Gervin scored an unlikely goal to draw the sides level with twenty three minutes on the clock. However with time almost up at the end of the first period Kieran Mc Geary turned the ball over deep inside his own defence before setting up a move that took the ball the length of the pitch and saw full forward Christopher Colhoun drill it to the net.
The Plunketts went in two up at the break and were good value for their lead.
The sides swapped points early in the first half before Ryan Loughran finished another fine move to the net with eight second half minutes gone. Derrylaughan tried to respond but Denvir Nugent, Ciaran Mc Kenna and Brendan Burns made sure scoring chances were kept to a minimum.
Points from Fergal Mc Aliskey and Martin Mc Stravog helped keep Derrylaughan in the match but once Frank Burns drove home a twenty first minute penalty the game as a contest was over and Pomeroy prevailed to win 3-12 to 1-12.
