Rock defeated Castlederg on Wednesday evening in the Donnelly Vauxhall Junior Championship 1-9 to 0-9 with Aidan Mc Garrity’s late, late goal finally deciding the outcome. There was very little between the sides throughout the game but the Derg will look back at this one and regret the four spurned goal chances which ultimately determined the result.
Points from Sean Meehan and Sean Harper inside the opening two minutes gave Castlederg the perfect start but Rock showed all their experience and were 0-3 to 0-2 in front by the 13th minute following scores from Aidan Mc Garrity, Paudie Ward and Conor Mc Creesh.
Castlederg drew level four minutes from the break following a Sean Harper free. Another placed ball from the same player and a fine Paddy Lynch point sent the Derg in 0-5 to 0-3 ahead.
Rock took over in the middle third at the start of the second half and had the Derg on the back foot for long periods. However great work by Jack Ramsey, John Harvey, Padraig Keyes and Gerard Gallagher made sure that Rock were forced into shooting from distance and under pressure.
Aidan Mc Garrity drew the sides level with seven minutes remaining and then converted another free to put Rock in front. Castlederg continued to attack and threw on captain Caolan Harvey who had been deemed not fit enough to start. Their positive approach was rewarded when Mark Corry fired over a difficult free to level the game again.
As the clock ticked towards sixty three minutes and it seemed the game was destined for a draw, Rock turned the ball over deep in their own defence and sprung forward. Corner forward Ryan Crilly drove from inside his own half before offloading to Aidan Mc Garrity who fired the ball to the back of the net with the last kick of the game. The goal sealed the win and sent Rock through to the last eight.
