The second game in the double bill at Pomeroy on Saturday evening saw Ardboe advance to the last eight of the Donnelly Vauxhall senior championship but they were made to work hard for their win against a battling Edendork side.
Kyle Coney. Shay McGuigan and Ciaran Gervin put the Rossas into an early three point lead with Edendork unlucky not to get a goal after only two minutes when Darren McCurry’s shot hit the right hand post before going across and hitting the left post as well. Superb scores from Paul Donaghy, Niall Morgan and McCurry had the St.Malachys level by the 8th minute. McGuigan hit a brace with Kyle Coney and Gavin Teague also on target and while McCurry had the last say of the half from a free it was the Loughshore men who led 0-8 to 0-4 at halftime.
Four minutes into the second half Ardboe midfielder Martin McKeown hit a brilliant goal to give them a firm grip on proceedings. To their credit though Edendork kept battling with midfielder Stephen Gervin getting a couple of points. Ardboe were reduced to fourteen men with Ciaran Gervin getting a black card having earlier picked up a yellow one and the drama continued when McCurry sent a 47th minute penalty over the bar.
That left three points between the sides and the Rossas were under the cosh but they came straight down the field for Caolan Mallaghan to strike a fine point with his weaker left foot. Sixty seconds later Edendork had the ball in the back of the Ardboe net but it was correctly ruled out as McCurry had double bounced. Ardboe made good their escape with points from McGuigan, Michael Cassidy, Coney, Thomas Wylie and substitute Nishy O’Neill seeing them emerge 1-15 to 0-9 winners.
