Urney and Gortin served up a very entertaining playoff game on Sunday before Urney secured their Intermediate status for next season following a 3-13 to 1-13 win.

However for the large crowd in attendance the major point of discussion following the game was the welfare of former all-Ireland minor winner Diarmaid Mc Nulty who suffered a concussion type injury just before the break.

The Gortin attacker’s injury meant the start to the second half was delayed by over forty minutes until the emergency services treated the player. We send our best wishes to Diarmaid for a full and speedy recovery.

For most of the first half there was little between the side but Urney’s ability to create and convert goal scoring chances proved decisive to the outcome of the game. Stephen Lafferty and Diarmaid Mc Nulty bagged goals for their respective sides and with two minutes left until the break the teams were tied 1-6 apiece.

The remaining minutes of the half transformed the game. Firstly Fergal Mc Nulty found the net for the border men, Gortin’s ace forward Diarmaid Mc Nulty got injured and then Plunkett Langan hit Urney’s third goal.

Half time score: Urney 3-6, Gortin 1-7.

When the second half finally got underway Gortin found themselves further behind following early points from Ryan Henry and Plunkett Langan. However the St Patricks did begin to get back into the game with Michael Mossey and Ruairi Keenan leading the charge.

With ten minutes remaining the gap was down to three points and Gortin appeared to have the momentum. Sadly for them that was as good as it got.

Sensing danger Urney rallied with points from Ryan Henry (3) and Johnny Lafferty which ensured that Urney will be playing intermediate football in 2016. Gortin can now look forward to a clash with Loughmacrory in the next round of the qualifiers knowing that a win in that game will secure their place in Division 2 for the new season.

Final Score: Urney 3-13, Gortin 1-13.
