Conor Mc Kenna Update
Wednesday 05.08.2020
TTM recently spoke with Eglish man Conor Mc Kenna in a wide ranging interview about his life as an AFL star. Conor spoke very positively about playing in the AFL but was frank about the challenges he faces. He has had one or two issues in recent months and if this latest news is true it raises further questions about his long term intentions with his club Essendon.
Senior Coach, John Worsfold, made some interesting comments during his press conference today, particularly in regards to Conor McKenna. McKenna sat out last Friday’s loss to the Brisbane Lions, one of two players “managed”, in view of a condensed schedule coming up.
However, Woosha today mentioned that Conor has been dealing with some motivational challenges, relating to his ongoing homesickness. He said that Conor approached the coaches last week about these issues. A collective decision was then made for him to play in the weekend match simulation, rather than the AFL game. Woosha said Conor would be available for senior selection to play GWS.
While Conor’s battle with homesickness is well-known, it’s unusual for a coach to discuss player management in terms of a player’s motivation. Although he is contracted to 2021, is it time for the club and Conor to have a frank discussion about his ambitions beyond 2020? If he believes he needs to return to Ireland before the end of his contract, should that decision be made sooner, rather than later?
