Tyrone Grade 1 Minor League Final
Cookstown 2-16 Carrickmore 2-11

Cookstown Fr Rock’s secured a second Grade 1 Minor double in their history in Edendork on Saturday afternoon when they landed the Grade 1 Minor League and Championship double.  The Cookstown men had to fight hard to overcome a very spirited Carrickmore side who with nine minutes to go had a one point lead.  Six points in a row without reply powered the Cookstown men over the finish line.

Cookstown led 0-3 to 0-0 after six minutes thanks to points from Eoin Long, Conall Sheehy and Lorcan McMurray.  Carrickmore responded with three Tiernan Loughran frees to leave the sides level by the 12thminute.  A Lorcan McMurray fisted point and an Eoin Long free eased Cookstown out to a two point lead by the quarter hour mark but that advantage was removed when Carrickmore hit back with two excellent points from play through Francie Hurson and James McCallan.

Another two Eoin Long points restored the Fr Rock’s advantage in the 21st an 25th minute but Carrickmore responded in style.  First Mattie McNally landed an excellent free and then Tiernan Loughran turned the ball to the Cookstown net in the 29th minute despite being off his feet at the time.  At that stage Carrickmore looked like they would take a 1-6 to 0-7 lead at the break but the drama of the first half hadn’t quite ended there.  When Cookstown wing half back Charlie McElkearney raced into the Carrickmore box in first half injury time he was upended for a penalty.  Cookstown captain Luke Neeson hammered the spot kick to the Carrickmore net to leave the half time score Cookstown 1-7 Carrickmore 1-6.

That one point lead for Cookstown was opened out to seven points within seven minutes of the restart.  Three Lorcan McMurray points (2 frees) followed up by a powerful volleyed goal from Cookstown centre half back Karol Wawrynkiewicz.  It was a superb strike.

Carrickmore being Carrickmore didn’t go away.  By the 51st minute not only had they carved into the Cookstown lead they had overcome it and taken a one point lead themselves.  Tiernan Loughran, Aidan Woods and Shea Munroe landing points for Carrickmore and Tiernan Loughran firing home a brilliant goal to level the contest.  Another point from Loughran with nine minutes to go put Carrickmore a point up but that was their last score of the game.

Cookstown hadn’t scored in sixteen minutes but it was the men in blue that got the next score.  Conall Sheehy scything through the Carrickmore defence to rattle over a point.  A minute later Eoin Long landed another one from play after a superb pass from Ghost Pizza Man of the Match Lorcan McMurray.  McMurray and Long clipped over two more scores ahead of the sixty minute mark and it was left to Karol Wawrynkiewicz and Rian McIvor to complete the scoring for Cookstown and with that the Tyrone Grade 1 Minor Double.

Final Score – Cookstown 2-16 Carrickmore 2-11

Referee – Sean Deveney (Drumquin)
