Harte Calls Up Six to Senior Squad
Thursday 03.11.2016
Tyrone manager Mickey Harte has given a call up to six new players in preparation for the 2017 season.
The Red Hands lost only once in twenty games in the season just past as they retained the McKenna Cup, won the division two National League title and lifted the Anglo Celt Cup for the first time since 2010.
Their only defeat came in the All-Ireland quarter final against Mayo and with the news earlier in the week that team Captain Sean Cavanagh is giving it another year Harte is giving some exciting new talent the chance to make it at Inter County level.
The six who have been called up are Michael Cassidy (Ardboe), Harry Loughran (Moy), Cahir McCullagh (Greencastle), Declan McClure (Clonoe), Ruairi Mullan (Cookstown) and Ronan McHugh (Aghyaran). Cassidy and Mullan both played on the Tyrone U21 side that won the All-Ireland title in 2015 and they will join the other nine players from that team that are already in the senior squad.
Greencastle clubman McCullagh was on the 2010 Tyrone squad that won All Ireland honours and is currently the second highest scorer in the division one league within the County. McClure came to prominence as Clonoe played five championship games in as many weeks before losing out in the semi-final to great rivals Coalisland after a replay. He is the son of former Tyrone star Harry who was midfield when the Red Hands played in their first All-Ireland senior final thirty years ago.
Loughran has been turning in impressive displays for his club Moy while McHugh recently finished top scorer in division two within Tyrone for the second year running.
They will begin training with the squad in a fortnight’s time in preparation for Tyrone’s defence of the O’Fiach Cup in Crossmaglen early next month.
