Ulster Minor Shield Semi-final 2024

The first competitive camogie game of the year was the Ulster Minor Shield final between Tyrone and Cavanwhich took place at Naomh Columcille.

Cavan began swiftly but Hollie Croucher was in superb form in goals. Rhianne McLoughlin took the first home point and when Cavan’s Aoife Sexton scored with their third opportunity, it proved to be their only score of the half.

Tyrone were playing with the advantage of the wind and had the lion’s share of possession for the remainder of the half. Grainne Cassidy, Eva Cullen and Órlaith McElduff all being key players, the latter hitting the net, McLoughlin bringing the score to 1-7 for Tyrone.

As the second period started, it was clear that Cavan had come out with a much more physical approach. Despite some fierce resistance from the Red Hand goalkeeper, Aoife Quinn and Aobh Bennett, Katie Tierney scored a goal, Rose Geoghegan a point and Sexton took four frees to bring the score difference to a single goal.

Tyrone then reapplied the pressure and good play from Kate Daly and Cora Quinn helped them gain some forward momentum. Catherine Moohan was,as ever, reliable on frees, including an incredible goal scored from near the 45-metre line. Despite a tense last two minutes where both teams showed real determination, Tyrone were able to take the win and now face Armagh in the final this weekend.

Result: Tyrone 2-9 Cavan 1-6

Tyrone scores: R McLoughlin (0-1) C Moohan (1-6, 1-4f), Ó McElduff (1-0), E Cunningham (0-2)

Cavan scores: A Sexton (0-5, 0-4f), K Tierney (1-0) R Geoghegan (0-1)
