Tyrone brushed aside the challenge of a disappointing Derry side in the quarter final of the 2016 Ulster Championship winning 3-14 to 0-12.

There had been much talk in the lead up to the game about how Derry were going to put it up to Mickey Harte’s team having lost the four previous meetings between the sides. The Oakleaf men needed to get off to a fast start but in spite of James Kielt’s opening score the home side found Tyrone too hot to handle.

Ronan O’Neill bagged the first of Tyrone’s three goals following a sublime piece of skill. Sean Cavanagh, O’Neill again and Cathal Mc Shane all added points as Tyrone threatened to run riot over Derry. Gaps were appearing all over the field as the Red Hands running game came to the fore. However Derry did manage to narrow the gap to a single score after Kielt landed his third point of the game fourteen minutes into the game.

Any chance of a recovery however disappeared four minutes later when O’Neill found the net for a second time following some great play from Sean Cavanagh. That second goal gave Tyrone further breathing space and they went on to add a further four points before rounding off a superb opening half of football when Peter Harte exchanged passes with Sean Cavanagh and then dispensed the size five to the back of the net.

Derry were shell shocked and trooped off at the break to the sound of the large number of Tyrone supporters on their feet in appreciation of their heroes.

The second half did see improvements in the Derry display but the damage had been done and Tyrone eased to a comfortable eleven point win. Indeed the winners missed a number of relatively straight forward chances for further points and goals. However on a day when Tyrone finally broke the Celtic Park hoodoo few if any Tyrone supporters were too upset.
