Tyrone sealed a return to the top division following a gutsy six point win over Meath at Navan on Sunday making it five league wins from five outings.

Mickey Harte’s side showed four changes from his original selection with Mickey O’Neill, Johnny Munroe, Niall Sludden and Conal Mc Cann coming into the starting fifteen. Sludden and Munroe lined out in the half back line but also made a significant contribution in the attack. Sludden in particular was hugely impressive in the opening half.

With Ronan O’Neill in fine form Tyrone recovered from conceding an early goal and losing full back Ronan Mc Namee to injury to lead 1-2 to 1-0 ten minutes in.

The Omagh man was joined on the score board by Ritchie Donnelly, Sean Cavanagh, Mattie Donnelly, Peter Harte and Johnny Munroe who hit Tyrone’s last two points of an exciting opening half. However Meath though showed they were more than capable of matching Tyrone with Mc Entee, O’Sullivan and Newman all landing scores for the Royals as the home side reached the break trailing 1-10 to 1-6.

The second half saw Meath stage quite a fight-back and with Newman solid from the placed ball they narrowed the gap to two. Mickey Harte made several changes as he sought to get fresh energy into his team. Once again Colm Cavanagh was immense for Tyrone as the hits came thick and fast in a very competitive second half.

Tyrone were dealt a double blow when they lost Ronan O’Neill to injury and then saw Conor Meyler limp off with a damaged hamstring. Having used all their subs the Red Hands went down to fourteen men and another Newman point gave their opponents increased hope.

However Tyrone dug deep and late scores from Sean Cavanagh, Peter Harte, Mattie Donnelly and Hugh Pat Mc Geary allied to some superbly disciplined defensive work made sure that Tyrone left Navan with the two points and promotion.

Final score: Tyrone 1-17, Meath 1-11.
