Croke Park Awaits Junior and Intermediate Semi Finalists
Thursday 26.01.2017
It’s always a possibility but very few if any dare to dream that their club championship season could end up at Croke Park in an All Ireland final. However that’s the prize for both Rock and Pomeroy as they make the relatively short journey across to the Athletic Grounds in Armagh on Sunday afternoon. They are just sixty minutes away from a 19th February final at headquarters. Their respective opponents hail from quite different backgrounds.
Rock take on British champions Dunedin Connolly’s. The Edinburgh team beat Glasgow Gaels to win the Scottish championship before taking out warm favourites John Mitchels in the British final. Their remarkable run was expected to end at the All Ireland quarter final stage when they were drawn to play Laois side Rosenallis. That wasn’t to be the case though. Dunedin went into the game as huge underdogs, partly to do with the fact that they had never beaten an Irish side in championship football while club football in Scotland has hardly ever been a hotbed for successful jaunts at All-Ireland championships. The last time they played on such a stage was in 2009 when they lost to Emyvale of Monaghan.
Pomeroy face Meath opponents in their All Ireland Intermediate semi final. The St Colmcille’s men are based in Bettystown. The Meath and Leinster champions defeated Arlow Geraldines (Wicklow) and Round Towers (Kildare) on the way to the Leinster decider. In the Leinster final they took on Rosemount from Westmeath.
On that occasion it took a Ben Brennan point three minutes into added time to earn a one point win for the Meath side. That score was set up after fine play by county man Graham Reilly made the opening. He’s a man that Pomeroy will want to get to grips with in order to ensure that he doesn’t have a big influence on the game. The Plunkett’s will be hoping that their own county men in the shape of Frank Burns, Kieran McGeary and Hugh Pat McGeary will have enough in the tank to put their own mark on what’s sure to be an edgy and nail biting affair from beginning to end.
Throw in for the Rock game is 12:30pm followed by Pomeroy at 2pm.
