Loughmacrory handball club is embarking upon a fund raising initiative as part of the build up to the World Handball Championships in October and are looking for all cycling enthusiasts from the surrounding area to get involved.
If you are a member of Termon Wheelers or another neighbouring cycling club, or just a keen cyclist, then you are invited to join the Loughmacrory club for this exciting undertaking.
The club will be taking part in the official GAA Handball ‘Club Cycle Challenge’ which will feature representation from all four provinces, with clubs from Roscommon, Wexford and Clare also participating in what will be a unique race in that the four groups of cyclists leave Croke Park at the same time and travel the same distance, but in different directions, back home.
There will also be a television camera following each group on their journey, and the highlights will be shown on the GAA Handball Show in September as part of the countdown to Worlds 2012.
The ‘race’, which will be more than 100 miles in distance, offers cyclists of all ability an opportunity to be part of an event which is guaranteed to be both challenging and enjoyable. For those who feel the distance is a little too much, there is also the relay option.
Loughmacrory handball club will seek to raise sponsorship money from this challenge to help with handball development and the costs associated with sending a team of players to the World Championships in October. Some of the proceeds will also be donated to a local charity.
The date for the big event is Saturday 8th September, the day before the 2012 All-Ireland hurling final, and the registration night is next Thursday, July 19th. So, if you enjoy cycling and you are ready to come on board, then please make sure to make your way to Loughmacrory GAA clubrooms next Thursday night (19th) and add your name to the list.
Please note that every participant must pay a registration fee on 19th July of £10, which secures their place and they will immediately receive their sponsor sheet and information leaflet. They will be asked to collect a total of £100 (+) in sponsorship, on top of the £10 registration fee.
If you are a member of any cycling club and can provide membership details to show you are a member of Cycle Ireland there is no additional fee. If you are not a member you will have to register for £20. This is essential for insurance purposes.
If you want to form a relay team, there is one registration fee of £10 for the team and the relay team will be asked to collect a total sponsorship of £150.
If you cannot make it along for the registration night, you can still register your interest but you must do this as soon as possible. Please check out Loughmacrory handball club on facebook for more information.
