On another memorable weekend for Tyrone handball, Caolan Daly and Jack Campbell became the first players from the county to secure places on the official Ireland team as the countdown continues towards the 2012 World Handball Championships in Dublin.
Jack claimed a much sought after spot on the national squad with a sequence of brilliant victories at the Irish One Wall Nationals over three days in the Citywest Hotel in Dublin, eventually taking the 15 and under title on Sunday with a couple of classy displays.
The young Brackey star, who won the All-Ireland under-15 doubles title, alongside Pauric Mullan, in the 40×20 code earlier this year, was on fire against Wicklow’s Daniel Curry in the semi-final and Galway’s Ronan Ó Beolain in the final and he was elated after earning his place on the Irish team.
He will be joined in the official Irish party by Carrickmore’s Caolan Daly who reached the Men’s under-23 decider at the one wall nationals with a couple of stylish wins against Limerick’s CJ Fitzpatrick and Mayo’s Ciaran Burke, and despite subsequently missing out on the title to Mayo’s Stephen Cooney, Caolan makes the Ireland panel by virtue of the fact that Cooney had already cemented his place.
Two other Tyrone players came very close to making it, Maeve McElduff missing out by a single point in the girls 17 and under category to Limerick’s Martina McMahon, and her brother Conor losing out narrowly to Cork’s Killian Carroll in the 19 and under decider after registering a stunning semi-final triumph over Galway’s Martin Mulkerrins.
Maeve and Conor’s father, Tony, brought some silverware home from the Irish Nationals after winning the Silver Masters Plate, while cousin Sean Kerr was once again one of the outstanding talents on display at the Citywest arena as he cruised to victory in the Boys 13 and under event. The win completed a truly historic four days for the All-Ireland Feile winner, who brushed aside a string of opponents in both 40×20 and one wall.
Carrickmore’s Darragh Daly almost pulled off the most sensational result of the entire weekend when he went down by just two points to Westmeath’s Robbie McCarthy in a thrilling Men’s open semi-final, while Michael Donnelly from Carrickmore pulled off a great win in the Mens Open Plate. And Eamon McCrory and Michelle Warren both performed really well to come through two big fields and reach the men’s and ladies challenger finals.
There was a large Tyrone contingent at the Citywest from Thursday through until Sunday and a number of players qualified impressively for the semi-final stage in their respective competitions, including Elizabeth McGarvey (11 and under) and Aoife Kelly (15 and under) in the girls section, and Lorcan McBride (11 and under), Dara Curran (11 and under), Cormac Munroe (13 and under), Patrick McCrory (17 and under) and Niall Kerr (Masters).
Emer Kerr and Elise McCrory, fresh from their Feile exploits, won the plate competitions in their age groups.
