St Joseph’s, Donaghmore 0-10 Aquinas, Belfast 1-5

ST JOSEPH’S Donaghmore recovered from conceding a late goal to defeat Aquinas in a thrilling Danske Bank Nolan Cup final in Páirc Esler on Tuesday evening.

The Ravenhill Road boys went a point ahead, 1-5 to 0-7, when John Leneghan got the final touch in a goalmouth scramble to score the only goal of a very tight game with less than six minutes of the match remaining.

But in spite of that setback the Tyrone side kept pressing and delivered three late match-winning points.

The excellent Caolan Mulgrew pointed a 45 to tie the sides, with Tiarnan Drayne edging them ahead as injury time drew closer before Brannon Molloy sealed the issue with the insurance point at the death.

Overall though it was an excellent final, played in a great spirit with a couple of small things working against Aquinas on the night.

John Leneghan and Caolan Mulgrew had pointed twice each by the tenth minute. Then after Aquinas full-forward Diarmuid McNulty was taken down in the area, Conor Woods in goal saved brilliantly from Eoin Nagle’s spot kick.

Nagle was having a super game, as were his team-mates Ben Gallen and John Leneghan, while Drayne, Molloy, Mulgrew and Darren P O’Kane were shining lights for the winners.

The teams turned over at 0-4 each, and it went to 0-5 each before things started to work against Aquinas. They picked up a couple of injuries and fell behind to points from Drayne and Molloy.

After the goal, Gallen picked up a black card and then Leneghan another shortly after, and the way was open for Donaghmore to take advantage and go through to the All-Ireland series next week.
