Dean Mc Guirc College travelled to Abbotstown on Saturday to take on Coláiste Éinde from Galway in the semi final of the Niall Mc Inerney Cup. After a pulsating sixty plus minutes of end to end hurling the Galway side emerged narrow victors on a score line of 6-13 to 7-8.

Early points from Padraig Mc Crystal and Shea Munroe gave the Dean the perfect start but Endas replied with a goal courtesy of corner forward Jason Carr. From then until the end of the game it was helter skelter hurling with both sides enjoying possession and creating numerous chances.

Finbarr Donnelly ht the net to put the Dean in front but minutes later Endas full forward Dara Walsh plundered a second goal for the Galway men. The Dean responded with a fine Aidan Woods strike to the net after a superb pass from Conor Mc Phillips to leave the teams tied on 2-2 apiece.

Galway captain Cian Corcoran then hit the net for his team’s third goal just before Aidan Woods struck over a fine score to leave two between the teams. Points from Corcoran and Conor Cloherty extended the Endas lead before Francie Hurson landed a superb sixty five which was followed shortly after by another Aidan Woods point.

Endas wing back Jack Nolan burst forward to fire over a point and this was followed shortly after by a fourth goal for the westerners from lively corner forward Jason Carr to leave the Dean trailing 4-6 to 2-5 with halftime rapidly approaching. However the Carrickmore school dug deep and completed the first half scoring with a point from Woods and a goal from Shea Munroe to leave the score at the break 4-6 to 3-6 in favour of the Galway side but with all to play for in the second half.

The Dean got the perfect start to the second half with early goals from Francie Hurson and Finbarr Donnelly to put their side a goal to the good. Back came the Galway school with another goal from corner forward Carr to level matters at 5-6 apiece.

The Endas enjoyed a period of dominance during which they added four further points before Shea Munroe fired a sixth goal to the net to get the Dean back in the game. It was a treat to watch as both teams went for broke. A Finbarr Donnelly goal put the Dean in front again but Endas finished the stronger with points from Corcoran and Dara Walsh before team captain Cian Corcoran sealed the win with a late goal.

Congratulations to Coláiste Éinde and commiserations to the Dean on the character and skill they displayed in their campaign.
