Aoife Kelly and Elise McCrory captured the All-Ireland colleges junior doubles title with two superb victories in Kingscourt last Saturday, and four days later Aoife then received massive recognition from Croke Park when it was announced that she had won the national special achievement award for 2012.
The Dean Maguirc College pairing, who were silver medalists in the under-15 world doubles championship back in October, reached the All-Ireland final on Saturday morning when they defeated Leinster champions, Kate and Hannah Dagg from Leixlip, and then came through another tough battle in the final against Roscommon pair, Fiona Tully and Caoimhe Shanagher, to claim the national title.
It was a superb achievement for the Loughmacrory/Breacach combination, who are both key members of the Tyrone juvenile team in 2013, with Aoife playing at under-16 singles and Elise at under-15. Aoife’s recognition in the annual handball awards is testament to the outstanding handball career that the young Loughmacrory girl has carved out for herself, with a lot of help and support from her coach and father, Kieran.
Tyrone were represented in three other sections at the national colleges finals last week and Maeve McElduff, representing Loreto Convent Omagh, came closest to glory when she lost narrowly in the girls senior singles final to Limerick star, Martina McMahon.
Jack Campbell, representing St Ciaran’s Ballygawley, lost out in the semi-final of the boys junior singles to Wicklow’s Daniel Curry, while Dean Maguirc’s Patrick McCrory bowed out in the senior singles semi-final at the hands of Wexford’s Galen Riordan.
There is still one Ulster colleges final to be decided, the under-13 doubles featuring Omagh CBS (Antoin Fox and Lorcan McBride) and Dean Maguirc Carrickmore (Ronan Curran and Ciaran Cuddy).
